Case study
Social Services contacted us with concerns about Albert, a 76 year old man with poor mobility and learning difficulties. Albert is a very friendly and trusting man who has worked all his life for Bromley Council. His trusting nature had allowed someone to befriend Albert and financially abuse him.
The appalling extent of this abuse came to light when this person tried to remortgage Albert’s property. This wasn’t Albert’s only problem, his poor health and the hilly area in which he lives meant that Albert was housebound and his living conditions were shocking.
An advocate worked closely with Albert to establish trust. The advocate organised his finances and continues to visit each week to discuss correspondence and to pay Albert’s bills. The advocate also helped Albert successfully apply for a grant to purchase a Freerider scooter. After working closely with an occupational therapist Albert is now able to get out to do his own shopping and collect his own pension, something he very much enjoys and a major factor in maintaining Albert’s independence.
Albert has no family and his illiteracy and trusting nature make him vulnerable to abuse. Advocacy has empowered Albert to have a voice in decisions affecting his life and has enabled him to live independently.
Making a will is the only way you can ensure your wishes are carried out and to protect the future of those you love. It is also an opportunity for you to leave a gift to charity.
Our work is only supported by donations raised from the public and funding organisations. Over the years funding has become increasingly difficult for small charities. We are very grateful to all our supporters in helping finance the really essential work we do.
